People from other European countries and from most of Latin America do not need to have a tourist visa to visit Sweden, but visitors who are from other countries including the United States do need to get a visa from the Swedish Consulate in advance of their arrival in the country. Moving to Sweden entails obtaining a Residence permit from the regional government office in Sweden. Proof of travel insurance, sufficient funds, and return ticket are all prerequisites for obtaining a 90 day visitor visa from a Swedish Consulate. Those staying longer than 90 days need an ID number. A work permit is required for non Europeans and usually comes along with the Residence permit. The application fee for the work permit is about 194 euros, and it requires a person to have a job in Sweden already lined up. Adult foreigners who live in Sweden for 5 years and have a clean criminal record become eligible for Swedish citizenship, or for only 2 years if they are from another of the Scandinavian countries.
