Expat Finance Services in Switzerland
The official legal currency in Switzerland, as well as Liechtenstein, since the year 1850 has been the Swiss franc. In that year it replaced all the locally used previous currencies, such as the Bern Franc, although there had also been a single currency known as the Swiss franc between 1798 and 1806. It now comes in different bank notes with the denominations of various colors according to value - 10 (yellow), 20 (red), 50 (green), 100 (blue), 200 (brown) and 1000 Swiss francs (purple). The 200 Swiss franc note replaced the previous 500 Swiss franc banknote in 1995. It is one of the only currencies in the world today that is still backed by gold, which makes it popular among investors.
Any amount of foreign currency may legally be brought into Switzerland. There are hundreds of Swiss banks, and they will open bank accounts for anyone. Foreign debit or credit cards will function at just about every store in Switzerland, and can be used at most ATM machines, although there may be an additional charge with different banks. When getting a bank account in Switzerland, the bank gives out a debit card that can be used to withdraw Swiss francs from any ATM in Switzerland. ATM machines in Switzerland are on for 24 hour banking availability.
