The official currency used by Republic of China government of Taiwan has been the New Taiwan Dollar ever since the year 1949. In 1949, the New Taiwan Dollar replaced the Old Taiwan Dollar officially as the nation's currency. Bank notes for the New Taiwan Dollar are currently issued in variously colored denominations, which are $100 (red), $200 (green), $500 (brown), $1000 (blue), and $2000 (purple) New Taiwan Dollar bills. Most banks that used to belong to the government in Taiwan have now become privatized. There are several local banks that are located in Taiwan, including the ones that are still owned by the government, there are also a number of International banks operating in Taiwan such as Barclay's, Bank of America, Citibank, Scotiabank, and Wachovia. The Bank of Taiwan was established by the Japanese government in the year 1899 as a central bank for the island. In the year 2001 the Central Bank of China took over the official function of issuing currency for the Republic of China, while in 2007 the Bank of Taiwan merged with the Central Trust of China, and the following year became a part of the Taiwan Financial Holding Group.
