Expat Finance Services in Turkey

The official legal currency in Turkey since the year 1926 has been the Turkish Lira. Between the years 2005 and 2009, however, it was known as the New Turkish Lira. It is one of the least valuable and most devalued national currencies in the world. The Turkish Lira now is issued in different denominations with the bank notes being of various different colors according to their value - 5 (brown), 10 (red), 20 (green), 50 (orange), 100 (blue), and 200 (purple) Turkish liras.

There are numerous banks in Turkey, both national and international, some of the primary foreign ones being Deutsche Bank, Citibank and HBSC. There are also two large Islamic banks in Turkey which do not charge any interest, as prescribed by Muslim law. Most banks in Turkey will let their customers open accounts in foreign currency, such as dollars, pounds, or euros, but opening one in Turkish lira normally requires Turkish residency.

Many Turkish banks today provide additional support in the form of online banking capabilities. Some Turkish businesses still do not take credit or debit cards, but the larger ones do. ATM cards can be obtained with bank accounts, but many ATM machines will not work for foreign cards.
