Health insurance in Uruguay is provided by both public and private insurers, including among others, Atlas Direct, American International Group or AIG and the state-owned Banco de Seguros del Estado. The country’s insurance sector was once monopolized by the state until the passing of the De-monopolization Act in 1993 which allowed the participation of private companies in the market.
